Which one do you prefer?

My husband helps me so much with my illustrations, always encouraging me to do better than I think I can. He's always liked the characters in this illo, but he also pointed out some things that needed help. Since I like this illo myself, I decided to redo it. There are a lot of things I like better, but some things didn't turn out quite as well (in my opinion) as they did originally. Out of curiosity, which do you prefer? And after you've done that, take a close look to see how many differences you can find.

This is an adorable illustration and each has its merits. The first one, I like the perspective better. It is more believable. The perspective is quirky in the second but playful. I like the colorations in the second. The use of black and the richer color seems to ground the image. I also like the addition of the tree in the window. I like the spilling liquid in the refridgerator in the first illustration as well as the reflections in the fridge. I also think that the boy standing on the books needs the additional books to be balanced. Otherwise, it looks like the books are in front of the sink and he is reaching for something on the counter instead of the bowl on the island. In the second illo, it looks like the cat is sitting on the boy's head, so I like the first illo as there is a little space between.

I hope this has been helpbul and not been too harsh. I really do like your vision and playfulness in this illo. Congrats on both.

A great concept for an illustration! I like the colours used in the second illustration a little better. I agree with Mary Beth's comments that the little boy on the right needs to be standing on a few more books - it was perfect in the first. You have managed to distinguish the foreground from the background better in the second illustration, even though there is more detail in the background of the second - very well done! Though, I do prefer the fridge in the first illustration.. Also, the facial expressions in the second illo are much better. All that said, I think the portrayal of the concept is very good. My 'nearly 4 year old' daughter loves it! Well done.

hmm. I'd probably have to say the second one although I like some things more on the first one. haha. they're both good though! lol. But if I had to choose I'd probably say the 2nd one. :)
