Today I'm researching and drawing cactus flowers.
I have to say that I love landscapes, but I'm not a fan of illustrating them! To me, they are tedious with little room for expression (unless I want to turn it into impressionistic or abstract art - which I don't). And so I ask myself why I've chosen to write and illustrate a story I've thought about for years . . .
But really, I'm truly happy to be working on this because it's a dream I've had for such a long time and I love how it's turning out. Every time I push myself, I'm pleased with the results. Still, I frequently have to take a deep breath and turn on the ol' brain to crank out every part that's not as much fun for me to draw (although I think it will be a lot of fun to paint later on). I so prefer drawing kids and animals with a lot of personality, but they will have to wait for another day . . .

Illustration Friday: Beginning
These kids are beginning their first day back to school. Of course, he's way more excited about it than his sister is -- until they return home. I haven't figured out what happened to make her so happy and him so sad, but at least he's got his dog to comfort him!

LunchboxQuestions.com
Beginning January 1, 2014, I'm launching LunchboxQuestions.com. When you visit every week day, you'll find a question to ask your kids in lunches, around the dinner table, or in any other fun way. I'd love it if you took a look (it's free!). And if you like what you see, spread the word. My two boys love these questions, and I've loved reading their answers! It would thrill me to know that other people are building great familial relationships through LunchboxQuestions.com. Come visit and let me know what you think!

wishing for warmer days
I sure wish it was warm enough to enjoy the beach like these two. We had snow last weekend and, although things have warmed up a bit, there are still icy parts that haven't had a chance to melt.
